The latest collaboration from board sport mainstay Vans sees the SoCal icon head way offshore to connect with South African surf lifestyle brand Mami Wata. Drawing inspiration from African surf culture and celebrating the power and positivity of surfing, the head-to-toe Vans x Mami Wata collection features a range of footwear and apparel, anchored by a rather jazzy Vans Authentic VR3 SF.

Founded in 2017 and introduced to the U.S. in 2021—thanks in part to efforts by television host, lifelong surfer and all around GOAT Selema Masekela—Mami Wata is an exciting, growing brand focused on expanding the conventional surf lens to include, develop, and support the long standing surf culture in Africa. By supporting world-leading African surf therapy organizations Waves for Change and Surfers Not Street Children, they hope to educate and share the positive effects of surfing for everyone, not just the privileged.

As for the actual collab collection, vibrant colors and rich textures find inspiration in legendary historical music events like Zaire’s “Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974 and Nigeria’s “Festac ‘77” mixed with a modern twist of checkerboards on checkerboards.

For us, the Authentic and Style 36 Decon options are standouts, while the board shorts and button down deserve a shout out too.
