Year after year, Japanese outdoor brand Snow Peak introduces a fresh new crop of highly-considered camping gear and apparel to market for users who seek out technical designs that marry form and function life no other brand can. The latest being a modest line of Gore-Tex rainwear—the first official use of the legendary ingredient brand for Snow Peak.
With a hat tip to mud season and wetter weather, the lightweight waterproof Rain Series feels like a natural next step to round out the brand’s offering of minimalist outdoor essentials and cement their status as a premium outdoor outfitter for urbanites and hardcore hikers alike.
Always fine tuning, the succinct collection includes a rain jacket, rain pants, waterproof cap and bucket hat. Pretty straight forward, but attractive in its minimalism nonetheless.
The capsule collection's hero product is no doubt the lightweight fully-waterproof hooded rain jacke ($500). Matching waterproof and wind-resistant rain pants ($375) feature an integrated belt, zippered pockets, and knee-to-ankle zippers for easy entry with boots on.
Completing the waterproof kit is the sleek rain hat and cap. For us, the bucket hat ($120) tips the scales just right. To ensure the elements stay out, each piece features seam sealing throughout and waterproof zippers where needed. Each piece is constructed from 100% recycled polyester treated with a DWR coating made without harmful PFC chemicals.
“The shoulder season calls for layering,” explains the team at Snow Peak, “and the collection offers versatile styles for a variety of weather conditions.” Snow Peak cites nature’s own shift from winter’s cool tones to the warmer greens, grays, and blues “that mirror the damp mists, emerging flora and early spring skies” as the inspiration for their latest color palette. Although rooted in the elemental, the soft, muted tones of the entire spring/summer collection also have a distinctly contemporary feel that will no doubt appeal to the modern outdoorist.
Since its inception in 1958, the Gorpcore staple has evolved from crafting iconic hard goods for climbing and camping, to innovative outdoor clothing, and most recently, made the leap into plein-air hospitality with the announcement of their first North American campfield, set to open this spring on 25 coastal acres in the brand's adopted home state of Oregon.
You can bet we'll be there to cover the opening of the Snow Peak Longbeach Campfield. But until then, you'll have to join us in making due by celebrating this modest collection and counting down the days till communal takibi and campfire cooked meals by the sea.
