Alex Strohl knows a thing or two about photographing in the great outdoors. With well over 2 million IG followers and a growing Youtube channel, the Montana-based adventure photographer (by way of Spain, France, & Canada) is an authority on the matter. So when he slid into our DMs about his new backpack collaboration with Moment, well, we clicked the damn link.
Out today, the Moment Strohl Mountain Light backpacking camera bag set is an exciting development in a world where most camera bags are extremely boring and technical, and where most backpacking bags are overbuilt and not very accommodating for photographers.
The new pack weighs just 1kg (that’s ~2.2lbs for us Americans) with a capacity of 45L, is made of ultralight, waterproof Cordura ripstop nylon with fully taped seams, and comes in three attractive colorways, making the adventure-ready pack both extremely functional and photographic. Best of all, the sleek design discretely integrates a compact camera compartment into the lower lumbar area, with a zippered back panel for quick access to camera gear.
As one would expect from a proper backpacking bag, all the features needed to get you out and back are included, from ergonomic shoulder straps and adjustable waist belt, to a removable, internal frame and molded back panel with ventilation. Camera clip attachment points can be found on the waist belt and shoulder straps too. And it wouldn’t be Strohl approved without side straps for carrying a tripod or tent poles and multiple attachment loops for ice axe and trekking poles.
Along with the pack, Strohl and Moment have also designed a camera loader, which is essentially a semi-hard carrying case that can work on it’s own or attach to the Strohl backpack. With a quick access zipper, the waterproof case fits a camera body with mounted lens—up to a 4D with 70-200 lens though also ideal for smaller mirrorless cameras and old school SLRs.
The Strohl Mountain Light 45L Backpack is available for $199, with the Camera Loader going for $60, and a padded camera organizer for $60. Get the whole lot as a kit for $299.
