It seems like nearly every apparel collection that's landed in our inboxes these past few years has included at least one pair of climbing pants (or shorts) sporting a webbing belt and shortened inseam. And 2022 appears to be no different, thanks to a combination of climbing’s trending status within outdoor recreation and an even more significant trend towards fashion that emphasizes comfort and the adoption of performance features.
Original climbing pant brand Gramicci is first out the gate for the '22 Spring/Summer season, as it looks back through catalogs dating to its founding in 1982 to offer a collection of apparel and accessories inspired by its heritage, viewed through the lens of the Japanese designers now behind the brand.
We suspect much of Gramicci’s current audience has encountered it through a recently heightened profile within the streetwear world. With that, it pleases us to see the new collection's launch editorial featuring people wearing Gramicci gear for what it was originally intended: climbing rocks.
And the new apparel looks dang good, too. Gramicci’s best-selling silhouettes from recent seasons make a return alongside new pieces like the Jam Short ($100) and Jam Pant ($120), which introduce an overdyed ripstop material into the mix that's noted for its tendency to age pleasingly with time and wear.
The stretch cotton-poly blend fabrics we’ve come to know and love from Gramicci's casual wear are back, both in the full cut Gramicci Pant ($90) and streamlined NN Pant ($10). Still, it’s great to see even more fibers designed for performance in the line, as in the new lightweight, waterproof Active Shell material, which is featured in the Shell Gear Short ($90) and Shell Jet Cap ($45).
If you’re not crazy about pants that let you rock climb with a liberating range of motion, then maybe some of the brand’s new graphic apparel will get you stoked. Beyond '90s-infused remixes of brand identity logos, look out for designs that feature images from climbing landmarks like Yosemite or even the Shorts Tee ($55), a tee that’s an homage to Gramicci’s classic G-Short ($70). (A t-shirt graphic that’s about a pair of shorts is precisely the kind of weird meta energy we're all about.)
Find the new Gramicci collection from your favorite retailers with buyers that know what’s what, in addition to the brand’s website where an additional Summer capsule will make an exclusive appearance.
