San Francisco-based accessory brand DSPTCH (pronounced “dispatch” despite a lack of vowels) produces minimally designed goods for everyday use that are doubly rich in technical features. Like many, we first became familiar with the brand through its nylon webbing camera straps, but these days it's backpacks and totes that make up a significant portion of the EDC brand's collection.
Showing its capacity for creativity even when working within the confines certain materials require, DSPTCH has released a limited collection of ultralight bags made of Dyneema—a fiber that, by weight, is stronger than steel—with its SF neighbors and dye creatives, Idle Worship.
Idle Worship focuses on bringing cosmic tie-dye styles to organic fibers, but its team was able to develop a technique for making color stick to synthetic Dyneema fibers, which are so durable that products using it typically only come in raw white.
The DSPTCH x Idle Workshop dyed collection includes the Unit Sling Pouch ($204), Unit Musette ($212), and Unit Zipper Tote ($255), all of which are bags from DSPTCH’s mainstay line updated in subtle yet compelling colors.
Beyond a few exceptions, you won't find many Dyneema products that come in color. That doesn't matter to ultralight backpackers who prize the stuff, but it did to Idle Worship. The brand took on considerable experimentation to develop a high-temperature dye process that adheres pigment to the hardy fabric. Soft and artfully uneven shades dubbed Pistachio and Ocean Fog color each bag, with every individual piece wearing its own unique nuance resulting from the hand-dye process.
The Idle Worship Edition bags are available in limited numbers from DSPTCH at both its San Francisco retail shop and online store. Don't sleep on this one, the collaboration release is sure to go fast.
