If you are the type that has a small rotation of shoes you wear until the lining is coming undone and the sole is worn through, you're in good company. For me, picking up a new pair of shoes, especially boots, means a lot of research, comparison, and general anxiety around the whole purchase.
Making that process a whole easier is Toronto-based women's footwear company Alice + Whittles, and the recently released Weekend Boot, a versatile, everyday hiker that perfectly blends rugged durability and city-approved aesthetics. Best of all, it's made of sustainable materials, is virgin plastic-free, and certified vegan.
After taking a pair of my own for a test drive among a recent bout of non-stop cold, rainy weather in New York, I can confirm she's all she's cracked up to be.
Based out of Toronto, Canada, the woman and POC led Alice + Whittles runs on an ethos of design, sustainability, quality, comfort, and functional integrity. Launched via Kickstarter back in 2013, the company’s co-founders are dedicated to ethical sourcing and production methods, researching their materials in-depth, and working with local craftspeople around the globe to create products with minimal environmental impact.
Best known for their for natural rubber Ankle Rain Boot, Alice + Whittles launched the Weekend Boot earlier this year to much fanfare. Developed on a farm in rural Portugal, the boots are produced in a family-run factory outside of Porto and made of an impressive line-up of earth-friendly materials—including a water-resistant upper made of repurposed marine plastics and 100% recycled wool lining, bound with vegan water-based glue to a chunky natural and sustainable rubber sole.
Available in five earth-tone colorways (Sage, Classic Sage, Black, Classic Black and Brown), they are as easily styled for the trail as around town—try 'em with fleece pants for a real cozy winter vibe. Wicked tread, a cushioned insole, sturdy ankle support, and a Chelsea-meets-hiking-boot silhouette means, she’s versatile.
Comfortable, sustainable and tough enough to endure the sidewalks of New York, I’ll be wearing these until the soles fall off.
