Embodying our very own interest in good design and the great outdoors is Piaule, a beautiful new landscape hotel and spa in Catskill, New York. Here, among 50-acres of deciduous forest atop a Bluestone ridge overlooking the valley below and mountains beyond, sits 24 modular prefab cabins, a wellness center, restaurant, and lodge. Each embracing quality and comfort firmly rooted in the surrounding landscape.
From the outset, Piaule co-founders Nolan McHugh and Trevor Briggs took major steps to center sustainability both inside and out. Of the 50-acre grounds, only five acres were disturbed to accommodate the entirety of the hotel, with limited tree removal. The team also prepared the land by working with skilled local specialists to eradicate invasive species of undergrowth and re-introduce native ground cover.
To further ground the property, only natural materials that seemingly could have been sourced onsite were used—wood, metal, concrete. In a few years time, Piaule will look like it grew there, right in its place.
Designed in collaboration with Brooklyn-based Garrison Architects, a pioneer in prefabricated architecture (especially where shipping containers are concerned), the property features a stunning spa and lofty lodge with boutique restaurant. But the individual cabins, standing on stilts around the property, steal the show.
All 24 of the cabin rooms were pre-fabricated in Quebec and delivered turn-key ready to the site. They range in size from 375 sq ft to 975 sq ft, the smallest accommodating two people, and the largest accommodating five to six people. Eight cabins feature integrated deck spaces, while two cabins and the main house are ADA accessible. All feature floor-to-ceiling wall-to-wall glass doors and extensive natural wood to further blur the line between outdoors and in.
Throughout all aspects of the property, natural materials and Piaule’s organic modern aesthetic can be found in all corners. In the cabins, heated Bluestone floors run into bathrooms. Handcrafted furniture like solid oak beds and chairs are paired with hardwood finishes.
The subtle yet meaningful touches continue with Piaule's own varied line of homegoods are peppered throughout—think bath amenities, organic sheets, towels sourced from Japan, and hand thrown tableware, all of which are available to purchase.
Also of note are Piaule’s many collaborations-from stools sourced by Williamsburg interior design shop Lichen and their long-term relationship with artist Kati Von Lehman to making their bath products with Catskill apothecary Village Common. The multifaceted brand is not afraid to experiment, for everyone’s benefit.
Piaule is one of many new landscape hotels popping up globally, and we have to say we're here for the movement. Rates start at $399/night, though the retreat's lush details and stunning views may just make it worth it.
