Set in the tropical forest of Bali's remote west coast, Lost Lindenberg is a recently opened hotel and surf retreat. The first international site from Franfkurt-based boutique hoteliers Lindenberg, the intimate property features eight treehouse-style guest rooms plus a pool, a spa, a plant-based restaurant, a black sand beach steps away, and surf lessons included in your booking. Unique in design and concept, the Earthy "guest collective" is designed to serve as an antidote to the more urban, bougie developments peppered throughout the Indonesian island, and a gateway to the coastline's less-crowded waves.
Inspired by the hotel's jungle setting, architect Alexis Dornier of treehouse start-up Stilt Studios and Bali-based interior designer Studio Jencquel imbued the lodgings and landscape with an air of mysticism—a winding path leads to the reception desk, elevated walkways between the cabanas literally lift guests into a different world, shaded corners create feelings of cozy nostalgia, and benches and fountains sit hidden in the gardens.
A wall of neon signs by Frankfurt-based artist Tobias Rehberger greets guests upon their arrival at Lost, and from there a hidden door leads into the property beyond, creating a symbolic transition from the hustle and bustle of urban life represented in the bright lights to the more tranquil, natural interior.
Each room, accessed by spiral staircases situated in eight tower treehouses of varying heights, contains a sleeping and living area and an almost open-air bathroom overlooking the surrounding jungle and coast. Floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate dark hardwood walls and wickerwork ceilings while neutral linens and custom-designed decor by Studio Jencquel round it all out.
Beyond serving plant-based meals that highlight Indonesia's varying cuisine made with local produce from the on-site permaculture garden, the property operates using a variety of sustainable practices. Solar panels generate electricity, electric bikes are offered for exploring the area, refillable bath products are provided in ceramic containers instead of those disposable mini bottles typical of hotels, and local materials like Bali green stone and tropical hardwood can be found as building elements throughout the interiors.
As for the surfing—another dreamy path leads away from the hotel onto the surrounding black sand beache, where beginners can take lessons from the resident surf instructor. One of the island's longest waves is also just around the corner at Medewi Surf Point. And beyond hosting classes, Lost also works with pro surfer Muklis Anwar on The Lost Bunch, an initiative supporting young surfers with surfing and English lessons.
A stay at Lost Lindenberg costs $350/night. Intensive surf programs are also offered including accommodation, daily meals, surf lessons, massages and optional river tours.
