Packable, portable hammocks have come a long way in recent years, thanks in large part to innovators like Kammok, the Austin, Texas-based maker of design-driven outdoors gear. Throughout the summer we’ve been testing the comprehensive Mantis hammock system, complete with lightweight sleeping pad and camp quilt. But today we’re talking about something completely different—the all-new all-weather Burro Pack Line, launched today on Kickstarter.
With three packs plus a collapsible hip pack, the line is geared at outdoor enthusiasts looking for multi-purpose gear capable of traveling with them wherever their pursuits may lead. Each piece is made with rugged, proprietary 70D ripstop nylon fabric with laminate core and PU coating that allows for accurate seam sealing and 12,000 mm wateproof rating, so you know it’s actually meant to take a licking without fail.
The Burro Zip 18 ($99) and Burro Roll 26 ($125) backpacks take aim at the commuter and weekend warrior, who’s biking to work, jogging to the gym, hiking on days off, etc. These two come equipped with a clever back pad that adds structure to the packs and doubles as both a removable laptop sleeve and a butt pad when hiking (or rather, taking a break from hiking). Plenty of flexible mesh pockets on the exterior and internal organization help keep things in order, while watertight zippers keep your gear dry.
The Burro Duffel 30 ($109) is the workhorse of the bunch, with enough room for everything from a week’s worth of gear to ropes, cams, and biners galore if the crag is your destination. Capable of keeping water out in pretty much all conditions, this heavy-duty duffel is unstructured for easy packing and features hide-away shoulder straps for an alternative way to carry.
If the quality and craftsmanship of their hammocks are an indicator, this line should do well. Maybe they’ll even tone down the massive Kammok branding a bit before these suckers jump from Kickstarter to retail shelves…
