Whether it’s picking up trash while jogging, encouraging responsible outdoor recreation, or championing the use of recycled, upcycled, and organic natural materials in its own production, Sweden’s Fjällräven is known for encouraging its users to consider the environment and their impact on it first and foremost. And the latest edition of the Kånken Art Series is no different, raising awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans and funds for environmentally-focused nonprofits.
Now in its third year, the Kånken Art collection gives varying artists the opportunity to refresh the iconic Kånken line of backpacks and bags for a good cause. For 2021, in celebration of World Oceans Day, the new collection features artwork by Swedish animator and illustrator Linn Fritz inspired by floating bits of microplastic choking our oceans.
Two main colorways—Ocean Surface and Ocean Deep—tie the four-piece unisex collection together, though the clever production process ensures each panel is cut and sewn from a different section of the printed patterned fabric, making each bag visually unique in the end.
Every year, eight million metric tons of plastics find their way into the oceans, which 71% of the Earth’s surface. By 2050, some estimate there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. To encourage change, a modest percentage of every Kånken Art Series purchase will be donated to the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and The 2 Minute Foundation, as part of Fjällräven’s Arctic Fox Initiative.
Additonally, each Kånken comes with a free, reusable Waste Bag, to be filled with trash while on your next wilderness adventure.
Each Kånken is made with the brand's signature G-1000, a heavy duty eco fabric made from recycled polyester and organic cotton. And with the use of a Greenland Wax Bar, the material can be rendered nearly waterproof, naturally.
Four different designs and sizes are avaialble, ranging from the extra small, extra cute Art Sling ($70) to the full sized 15" Laptop bag. Shop the full range through the link below.
