As any outdoors-loving city-dweller knows, the best gear pulls double duty—in town AND on the trail. From shell jackets and backpacks to boots, true versatility is not just the goal, it’s what we expect. With nearly a century of experience in the footwear game, Portland, Oregon’s own Danner is no stranger to functional innovation—the brand was the first in the outdoor industry to use a GORE-TEX liner in a boot back in 1979. With the all-new Overlook, a true outdoor-urban crossover shoe, Danner continues its legacy of good design and dependable performance.
Over the past couple months we’ve put the Jet Black Overlook to the test all around our hometown, New York City.
Within that aesthetic package there’s no shortage of technical features, premium materials, and craftsmanship along the lines of what continues to draw us to the legendary PNW brand.
At first glance, the Overlook features minimalist yet architectural styling anchored by structural suede detailing and a breathable, water-repellent EnduroKit upper that fits snug like a sock to ensure a customized fit. A lugged Vibram outsole adds stability on rocky trail sections and superior pedal grip for crosstown bike rides. And a dual-density midsole that’s softer in the middle and firmer around the edges ensures all day comfort, whatever’s underfoot.
A luxe veg-tanned leather heel cup is the cherry on top. It’s like a modern designer sneaker, but way more badass. And actually functional.
Like any city-based outdoorist, we try to bring a bit of adventure into our daily lives when and where possible—and the Overlook is a damn fine everyday shoe for this lifestyle. From hoofing it across Manhattan and biking through Brooklyn to bushwhacking to bouldering spots just north of the city, putting this new Danner design through the paces left us with two thoughts. First, it works. Wherever you go. And two, it’s going to be a fun summer.
