When it comes to outdoor and hiking gear, the more multipurpose and multi-use the better. And, well, The Campo is new combination hammock, poncho, and ultra-light backpacking shelter that's definitely in the running for the “most functions in a single outdoor gear item of all time” title. (Sorry TripTarp.)
Check out our guide to the best hammock tents.
The unique product comes by way of BE Outfitter, which first came on the scene in 2017 with a successful Kickstarter for their Tahquitz Pack and Cabrillo Dry Bag. The brand's small but solid collection of products is aimed toward climbers and avid outdoorists, focusing on versatile designs intended for both adventure and everyday use. I.e. it's most certainly a Kickstarter company.
How The Campo works is quick clever. In one iteration, it’s a one-person hammock for relaxation. In another, it's a tent footprint or an outdoor blanket to sit on. If it starts raining The Campo transforms into a rain poncho, with a hood and cinch tabs for an adjustable fit. Or, if you prefer to escape the rain with room for two, attached trekking poles and The Campo can be used as an effective, waterproof shelter. No doubt it could be strung up like a lean-to with enough paracord, too.
At just over one pound in weight with a span of 7'5" by 4'7", and made of waterproofed, tear-resistant ripstop nylon, The Campo is a clever Swiss army knife of a product. Plus, it easily packs down into an integrated stuff sack. And, it even looks pretty slick (like a rain slick? Get it?)
Available in burnt orange or gray for $84.
