At Field Mag, we love sleek and sophisticated outdoors apparel—something the Scandinavians are particularly good at. From sustainability pioneers Houdini of Sweden and OG Icelandic brand 66North to Norway's hardcore outfitter Norrona, the Nordic sense of style and need for high performance outdoor wear has brought many impressive brands to light. Though few fill the lifestyle gap, AND none are entirely made by women, for women. Enter Astrid Wild, a new Nordic outdoor lifestyle apparel brand with all the careful considerations we’ve been looking for in feminine outdoor wear (without the "adventure teal").
Launched in January 2019, Astrid Wild began as an idea from two women and has since turned into an impressive line of functional apparel deliberately designed and ideated by multiple female designers with input from over 400 women who all wanted the same thing: stylish yet functional outdoor gear that could meet their needs on a daily basis.
Since the debut of the Astrid Avant-Garde Outdoor Pants, the brand has added six other thoughtfully designed pieces, with standouts being the Amelia Hiking Pant and the Minna Wool Fleece. Their merino wool tops are elegant and practical, as well—fit to be used as a baselayer in the backcountry or even a dress top around the city. They're just that lovely.
Colorways across the board are neutral and timeless—and not obnoxious like a lot of other women-specific outdoor gear we're used to seeing. Phew.
And they're built to perform, too, using recycled wool from Italy and technical fabrics from Sweden—with a mission to make environmentally responsible choices throughout the supply chain. Each piece in the line—especially the pants—not only looks good but is made to face rough weather on the trail while still being elegant enough to wear to the office (if we ever do the office thing again). And there are pockets. Big pockets. So. Many. Pockets.
According to their extremely beautiful and intentionally crafted Instagram page that I’ve personally been following for over a year, their hiking pants seem to be their hottest commodity and consistently sell out (pst, they’re in stock right now!).
Designed by women for women, each aspect of Astrid Wild is women-centered. Even products are named for and inspired by “real, remarkable women,” including Amelia Earhart and Minna Canth, a Finnish writer, social activist, and advocate for women's rights.
With dazzling reviews from all over the world on literally every item, Astrid Wild is a charming brand we are keeping an eye on.
