Thanks to quality instant coffee, titanium French presses, and of course, the Aeropress, there are now just as many ways to make and serve good coffee at a campground or base camp as there are at home. Well, almost. Invented way back in '41, the Chemex remains one of the most highly regarded, aficionado-approved devices for making perfect pour-over coffee. But—and don't let the Instagram influencers fool you—its all-glass design is best enjoyed indoors only.
Surprisingly, nobody's come up with a shatterproof alternative, until now. MiiR, a sustainability-minded maker of insulated bottles and other drinking vessels, has steadily been edging its way into the realm of arabica and robusta with well-designed camp mugs, a folding V60 stand, and even a kettle. Now the brand is going whole bean with the introduction of the New Standard Carafe, a pour-over vessel with an hourglass shape that readily calls to mind its glass grandfather.
The new MiiR carafe works like your usual Chemex, designed for pour-over brewing with a conical filter of your choice. It's minimal, understated design boasts a material list that should be familiar to fans of the company: medical-grade 18/8 stainless steel, double-wall vacuum insulation, 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. Though not explicitly for outdoor use, it's hard not to see how ideal the Carafe would be for serious coffee enthusiasts looking to step up their car camping and cabin coffee routine.
Unlike a glass Chemex, which is easy to break while cleaning (or, heaven forbid, while camping) the durable MiiR New Standard Carafe can survive rough surfaces and getting knocked and, once brewed, your coffee will stay hot against the wind thanks to the vacuum insulation. Plus, the design unscrews in the middle, leaving you with two simple shapes to pack should you want to brew your coffee at a hard-to-reach campsite.
The New Standard Carafe was funded on Kickstarter to the tune of $113k and now it's available for purchase directly from MiiR for $80 with a press-fit lid (filters sold separately). MiiR also released a digital coffee scale, too, if you want to go full n3rd.
