Inspired by their own travels and a shared love for nature, this Portland-based couple designed and built the Klickitat Treehouse in the wilds of Washington state to share with fellow lovers of good design and the great outdoors.
Though owners Taryn and Colin Mooney drew inspiration from the many spaces they've stayed in while adventuring together over the years, they knew their first hospitality project would need to be unique—so they looked to the trees. Past experience learning and building treehouses back in Colin's home state of Ohio—where his family runs a treehouse resort and wedding venue, built in 2012 with the aid of Treehouse Master’s Pete Nelson—came in handy as the two set about designing their own treehouse rental near the mighty Columbia River just north of Oregon/Washington border.
After purchasing a property in White Salmon, WA, the Mooney’s got to work constructing the Klickitat Treehouse—named for the indigenous Klickitat people native to the area—as well as a cedar tiny house. Elevated 20ft off the ground and wrapped around several established Douglas Fir trees, the treehouse and its adjoining deck can host up to six people within its forest-bathed walls.
A lofted central space, floor-to-ceiling windows, and skylights open up the space to natural light, the peak of Mount Adams, and of course, plenty of trees.
Inside, Northwest meets Southwest design and the clean, simple lines of Scandinavian architecture. Natural-hued textiles and furnishings create an inviting atmosphere within the black and white interior and close attention to detail means you’ll be well-prepared for a visit of your own.
Outside, the wrap around deck features a private outdoor shower and plenty of lounge space. While below a firepit is surrounded by 15 acres of evergreen forest. As is that wasn't enough to encourage a true connection with Mother Nature on its own, the property lacks wifi—forcing guests to unplug and unwind for a moment, however brief.
With design that would give any house-house a run for its money, the Klickitat Treehouse is clearly a product of a years-long pursuit to provide an extra special place for nature-lovers.
