This past summer we spent a few days backpack camping in Montana's Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness with Mystery Ranch. Deep in the woods we encountered torrential rains, hot afternoons and cold nights, all of which did little to faze our arsenal of Hilleberg tents. The Swedish-made, ready-for-anything tents may be old news to experienced backpackers and hardcore alpinists, but to those looking to expand their knowledge of the most badass outdoor gear avaialble, listen up.
We spent a series of nights in three tents—the Keron 3, Staika, and Soulo. The three, two and single person tents, respectively, each have their own unique shape relative to occupancy with an intuitive zipper system and covered storage areas that exist separately from the internal sleeping area. Each design feature an integrated rain fly and footprint that work with the core of the tent in a clever, double-wrapped system that's sure to keep even the gnarliest storms at bay—meaning you can pitch these suckers in the pouring rain without soaking your entire internal setup, as we learned first hand.
For further stability a comprehensive tie-down system works with titanium poles and the tents' highly-considered shapes to create a temporary structure worthy of permanence. As many can attest, it'll take hurricane conditions to move these tents from their footprints.
