The Lake District in the North of England is one of Britain's 15 National Parks, and is the spiritual home of the outdoor community in the UK. For centuries outdoor types have flocked to the region to experience its lakes, forests, and mountains (or fells, as they are known locally). And though the Lakes is known well for its rugged landscapes, its climate is equally notorious. On any given day you’re likely to get at least a taste of all four seasons.
Exposed roads, insanely steep gradients, and constantly changing weather make it a very testing place to ride a bike. It’s unpredictable, and demands that you respect it. Do so however, and it will reward you handsomely. Our most recent trip was with road bikes. Two days in the mountains, tackling the notorious passes of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Hard Knott, and Wrynose.
If you aren’t used to climbing gradients of 20% when you arrive, you are when you leave.
Tough riding in changeable conditions. The best of British cycling.
